Media Release: Atwater Park Drowning

Shorewood , WI: This evening at approximately 5:47p.m., the Bayside Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call reporting a subject who had jumped into Lake Michigan near Atwater Park, 4000blk N. Lake Drive in Shorewood and had not resurfaced. The Communications Center dispatched law enforcement and fire resources immediately; in addition to contacting the United States Coast Guard.

Units arrived shortly after being dispatched and made the descent to lake-level to determine the exact location of the victim and direct resources to that area. The Milwaukee Fire Department Dive Team was also requested. North Shore Fire/Rescue personnel donned water-rescue suits and two members were deployed into the lake from the area the victim was last seen to initiate a search. Shortly after this, the Milwaukee Fire Department Dive Team and Marine units, the Milwaukee Police Department Marine Unit, and the United States Coast Guard arrived in the area and initiated additional searches of the water.

Within minutes of the Milwaukee Fire Department divers being deployed into the water, the victim, a 14 year-old male, was located and removed. Resuscitative efforts were initiated immediately along the shoreline and unfortunately; the victim succumbed to his injuries. North Shore Fire/Rescue extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim.

All investigative questions should be referred to the Shorewood Police Department and the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office.

North Shore Fire/Rescue would like to extend sincere gratitude to the Milwaukee Fire Department Dive Team and Marine Units, the Milwaukee Police Department Marine Unit, the Shorewood, UWM and Whitefish Bay Police Departments as well as the Shorewood DPW and United States Coast Guard for their assistance with getting various necessary resources to the scene and to the shoreline of the lake.
