TIPS FOR COPING WITH FLOODS

Brown Deer — North Shore Health Department officials are urging victims of the recent flooding to take the following health and safety precautions when cleaning and repairing their flood-damaged homes:

A twenty page booklet is available online from the EPA that gives simple instructions for safely cleaning your home after a flood.
http://www.epa.gov/mold/flood/flood_booklet_en.pdf

If you’re not sure when you had your last tetanus immunization please contact the North Shore Health Department at 414-371-2980.

North Shore residents with private wells which were submerged by flood waters should not drink the water. They should wait till the waters recede and then sample the well for bacteria.

Sample kits may be obtained from the North Shore Health Department. If samples
come back as having unsafe levels of bacteria present, it is recommended that the well be disinfected and then re-sampled. Information on how to perform sampling and well sanitizing can be obtained from the health department or on the Department of Natural Resources web site at: http://dnr.wi.gov/org/water/dwg/flood.htm

North Shore Fire Department

Media Release - February 12, 2008

Approximately 150 children ages five weeks to 16 years old along with a group of senior citizens were evacuated from the Dunwood School Building in Fox Point this morning after a fire damaged a classroom in the building. The building is owned by the Fox Point-Bayside School District but is leased to various private educational providers including the YMCA, which operates a daycare in the building, the New World Montessori School, and other various community groups. A fire alarm system alerted occupants and the North Shore Fire Department of the fire. Occupants of the building initiated an evacuation procedure with the assistance of firefighters and police officers from the Fox Point Police Department while other North Shore Fire Companies extinguished the fire and conducted searches to ensure the building had been completely evacuated.

All of the children were removed from the school to a Milwaukee County Transit Bus that had been in the area on a regular route and was used to shelter the children while alternative arrangements for them was made. The Transit Bus, along fire, police and private vehicles were ultimately used to move the children and staff to a building owned by the Village of Fox Point that is used as community center/ice skating warming shelter. Staff from the schools and daycare center along with Fox Point Police Officers, Department of Public Works Officials, North Shore Firefighters and North Shore Fire Department Chaplains coordinated an effort to care for the children and reunite them with their parents at the community center building. The senior citizens group was able to self-evacuate.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and ventilated the building, but it was determined for the safety of children and staff that the schools and daycare would close for at least the remainder of the day. No children or staff members were reported injured. Approximately twenty-five firefighters and paramedics responded to this incident from the North Shore Fire Department. Damage to the building and its contents is estimated at $45,000. It was determined the fire was caused by a torch being used to repair windows in the building. For more information on this incident, contact the Operations Battalion Chief at (414) 228-5205.

Media Release - December 24, 2007

On December 24, 2007 at approximately 5:34 PM The North Shore Fire Department was dispatched to a report of fire at 500 W Bradley Road in Fox Point. Fire was extending from the second floor to the third floor on arrival. First arriving crews immediately began rescue and fire attack of the occupied apartment building. Due to the extent of rescue operations and the rapidly expanding fire the incident was upgraded to a Second Alarm to bring additional crews to the scene. Crews made rapid entry to the apartment where the fire is believed to have started and removed the occupant. Fire and emergency medical crews made every effort but were not able to resuscitate the occupant. A Police Officer and Firefighter were treated for injuries sustained at the fire. Porticos fire

The cause was believed to have started in a sleeper sofa, located in the in the North bedroom of the involved unit. Analysis of the scene further indicates this was an accidental fire. Fire Investigators from the North Shore Fire Departments F.I.T team along with the Fox Point Police Department and the ATF made this determination. Approximately twelve apartments have been affected by fire, smoke and water damage. Residences are being assisted to find temporary housing.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) worked efficiently to bring seven neighboring fire departments to assist with this fire. Thiensville, Mequon, Wauwatosa, West Allis, Menomonee Falls, The City of Brookfield and Saint Francis provided fire companies to assist in firefighting operations and covering North Shore Fire Department stations.

The North Shore Fire Department would like to emphasize that proper installation and maintenance of smoke detectors save lives. In addition, every residence should practice their Exit Drills In The Home (E.D.I.T.H), to ensure proper evacuation avenues and techniques.
